Hell Week and A Thank You or Two

I don't have just one Hell Week in my life I have a few.  They come around the kids' birthdays (planning parties for the masses can be Hell), Holidays (The big Easter Egg Hunt in the cul-de-sac, Haunted House, Santa in the cul-de-sac for Christmas Eve...that reminds me I have to go order him.  I'll be right back.  Okay, I'm back.  Santa is in the process of being ordered.  Check out Santaforhire.com if you want to order one for your Xmas party) and triathlons.

However, just because it is my Hell week, not everything about these types of weeks are hellish.  For instance, I received my 2nd and 3rd blog awards from three really great bloggers:  Quinn at Seeing. . .dreaming. . .writing  was the first to send me such a sweet award and then today I was surprised to find myself award by the leaders of the Writing Half Marathon I have been participating in; erica and christy.

Look at it!  Just look at it!  It looks good enough to eat!

Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!

I am supposed to send this sweet award onto a few other sweet blogging friends and I promise I will as soon as Hell Week is over.  I want to avoid giving awards on this sweet and sour posting.

I spent Sunday night sending out updated emails to remind my 11 families of donators what they offered to donate and gave them the days of the week to bring their items.  Last night, I spent some time going over the plans with my husband so we could map out where animated decor and dummies are going to be located and then we tried to pin point exactly where all the scarers are going to be arranged.  Friday we handed out 100 invitations at the school and it didn't seem hardly enough now that the word has spread about our annual event.  Unfortunately, not everyone gets an invitation every year because we couldn't possibly accomodate the whole school of 750 kids.  However, some won't show and others will bring their friends along.  It will be interesting to see the turnout this year.

Still lots to do before construction begins on Friday.  My mom is flying out from Utah tomorrow to help with the kids during this event, and we need to start stuffing dummies, putting batteries in animated decor, and wait until Thursday night to figure out what loose ends need to be picked up that might have been overlooked on the donation list.  Once this ball is in motion there is no stopping it.

To top it off, I've been participating in erica and christy's Writing Half Marathon and I had no idea how fierce the competition was going to be.  It's an excellent indication of what NaNoWriMo is going to be like for me.  I started out thinking 1,200 to 1,500 words per day was going to be enough to keep me near the top in points but I was wrong.  Sunday night I turned in nearly 5,000 words for all of the weekend and it still wasn't enough to make me the points leader.  I turned in over 1,700 words around 7pm last night and thought I should get some sleep early but I couldn't get my rapidly forming story out of my head so I got up and pounded out another 2,285 words which I submitted this morning.  I think I might be the points leader for the moment, but it's day to day in these types of competitions.  I am driven now, thanks to the competition, but also because I started worrying that I wasn't averaging NaNo's speed which is 1,666 words per day.

All in all, if you don't hear from me in comments or new posts for the remainder of this week then just know that I'm either under a pile of haunted house decorations or tucked away pounding out as many words as I can for this competition.

Tell me, do you have a Hell Week or two in your life and when do they appear?  Any advice on getting through these types of weeks with less stress?

  1. Wow youre busy! You deserve some extra award. I didnt know you did all those different events in the cul-de-sac. Im actually really impressed. I just wish there had been stuff like that near me when I was a kid. Your kids and all the others must love it.

I get hell weeks too, but they usually creep up unexpectedly. It starts simple enough, but then the shit just keeps getting piled on. I dont even know how I get through them. I guess I just take care of the things as they appear and work my way through them. Theres really no other way to do it - just grin and bear it (although I dont think I do much grinning, I just bear it).

It will all be worth it though when you have your manuscript finished and the kids are screaming going through the haunted house. I think you just need to focus on the pay-off to get through those hell weeks.

  2. Congrats on the awards! And yes, Hell weeks creep into my life too. Last week was one for me because I was in charge of our preschool garage sale on top of all my normal activities. I don't think I handle the stress well, because I break out in hives on my legs! Ew!

  3. Wow, that is one busy schedule! But congrats on the awards!! Very well-deserved!

And my hell weeks creep up on me too. Evil, but that's the way it is ;) I've tried to hide from them, but usually that doesn't work, so I just grind my teeth and battle my way through them *lol*

  4. I'm currently in hell week as well. I;m not quite so busy but I have midterms galore this week and next. It makes me feel like I'm burning in a fiery pit. I don't think it helps that in Chemistry yesterday I really did almost blow my face off with leaky gas and faulty flints. Sigh. This week is full of fire everywhere, it seems.

  5. Quinn - The pay-off is a wonderful thing to focus on, thanks for the advice.

Megan - I'm happy that you made it through the garage sale. I'm sorry that it came with hives! I enjoyed reading your post about it though.

Marieke - I might find myself trying to do a little bit of hide and go seek from my week but I doubt I'll find a good hiding place. :)

Melissa - Oh no!!! I feel terrible about your fiery chemistry blast. I hope you are okay. I wish you the best of luck on your midterms and hope that the fire doesn't burn out of control into the next week. Thanks for commenting.

  6. Hell week pops up every now and then, maybe in preparation for every week being hell week in November's NaNo, ha ha.

Your neighbourhood sounds lovely. Lucky kids.

Well done on the writing marathon. I couldn't do it in the run up to NaNo. Other stories to finish and a novel to at least outline, eek.

I've buddied up with you in NaNo. I'm parisden..:)

  8. I do have those difficult weeks at times, but they just seem to randomly come and I just get thru them somehow. Managed to do NaNo and blog daily last year without too much problem. This year I've cut back on blog days so in theory it should be better.
My NaNo name is "wordleeness". I've added you to my buddy list.

  9. L'Aussie - Thanks for buddying up with me at NaNo. I am likely doing myself a huge disservice by competing with words right before NaNo. It will be interesting to see how it pans out, for sure. Thanks for the congrats and the comments.

Arlee Bird - Hello new friend! I have just buddied up with you at NaNo. That's good to know that you were able to blog and NaNo. I think I will be tailoring back on a lot of extra stuff that month. Thanks for the comments.

  10. Oh yes Hell Weeks. They seem to sneak up on me when I least expect it. But hearing about other's Hell Weeks... when they're writing ferociously... make me more competitive. I gotta get back to the writing myself now. Thanks for the push.

  12. Jenny - All right!!! That's the spirit! Get to writing. Write on writer! Are you doing NaNo?

Erica - Oh no! I'm sorry about your Hell School Year. Part of the reason for the rush is because I promised my writing group and my husband that I would take a week off right before NaNo and I'm sticking to it. That means I have to hit that 21k within the next five days (or four now). On a really good day I can get at least two hours of writing in during the day but mostly I find myself starting around the time my husband gives the kids a bath before bed (7:30pm usually). And then after everyone is in bed, I write for as long as I can. Some nights it's until 10:30pm, and some nights it's until midnight or so. The rest of the day is packed with shuffling 3 kids around to school and extracuricular activities (not including cul-de-sac events). You probably have a really tough schedule with school added into your mix. I can't even imagine (I volunteer in my kids' class and I take my hat off to teachers, it's hard work) but I commend you for it. And thank you for this motivating competition.

  13. I have hell (2) month(s) and it's so hilarious that you call yours hell week because of birthdays. Mine is hell month because my daughter's birthday kicks it off on Oct. 26 stepson: Oct 31, son: Nov. 8, mine Nov. 20 Thanksgiving, Darling man's Dec. 13th and then of course Christmas. It technically end in Jan. with last stepson on Jan 22 but I breathe easier after Christmas.

You have a LOT of energy! You do way more than I cold even think of doing!
